Most people buy a trellis for one plant. Then they see what it looks like on the wall — and they want more. Why a Modular Approach Changes Everything

A single trellis panel is a support. A system of panels is a design element. When you treat the wall trellis as a module, a few things become possible that a single panel never achieves:

  • Full-height coverage on a tall garden wall or rendered fence, without needing a custom-made solution.
  • A living screen along a boundary, where overlapping vines across multiple panels create a continuous green surface.
  • Structured horizontal runs along low retaining walls, raised bed borders, or the base of a building.
  • A vertical garden wall on a courtyard or terrace, where the trellis system frames the entire back wall as a single composition.
  • Scalability over time — start with one or two panels for a young plant, then add more as the plant matures and spreads.

Three Configurations to Consider

1. Vertical Stack — for tall walls and high climbers

The most common modular configuration: panels mounted one directly above the other on the same vertical axis. This is ideal for vigorous climbing roses, wisteria, or large-flowered clematis that can reach 8–12 feet or more. A two-panel vertical stack gives a mature vine the full run of a fence or the side of a building, top to bottom.

Key installation note: Leave a 1–2" gap between panels rather than butting them flush — vines and tendrils will weave through the gap naturally. Align fixing points on the same vertical plane so the panels read as a single column from a distance.

2. Horizontal Run — for wide surfaces and boundary screens

Panels mounted side by side along a horizontal surface — a long garden wall, a timber fence line, the side of a shed. A horizontal run of three or four panels creates a continuous lattice that reads as a single, intentional feature rather than a scattering of individual supports. This configuration works especially well for espaliered fruit trees or for jasmine and honeysuckle trained to spread outward rather than upward.

Key installation note: Keep all panels at the same height and maintain a consistent 2–4" gap between them. Use a chalk line or spirit level before drilling to ensure the row is perfectly horizontal — misalignment becomes more visible with each additional panel.

3. Grid or L-Shape — for corners, courtyards, and full-wall compositions

The most dramatic configuration: panels arranged in a grid (rows and columns) or wrapping an interior corner. A 2×2 or 2×3 grid on a courtyard wall turns a bare rendered surface into a formal garden feature. An L-shape wrapping two walls of a corner bed creates a sense of enclosure and makes a small space feel intentionally designed.

Key installation note: For corner installations, allow for the wall return depth when measuring — panels on adjacent walls should be positioned so the outer edges align visually when viewed from the main angle. Map out the full grid on paper before drilling, accounting for gaps between panels and any windows, downpipes, or fixtures that need to remain accessible.


Growing with the System: Starting Small

One of the most practical advantages of a modular trellis system is that you don't need to commit to the full configuration upfront. A common approach:

  • Year 1: Install 1–2 panels at the base of the wall where you plant a new climber. The plant fills the lower section while establishing its root system.
  • Year 2–3: As the plant pushes upward and outward, add panels above or beside the originals. The new panels slot into the same system seamlessly — same finish, same fixing style.
  • Year 4+: A mature vine across a full panel system is a garden feature that essentially maintains itself, with the trellis providing the invisible architecture behind the green.

This staged approach also spreads the cost over time, which is useful for larger projects.


Finish Consistency Across Panels

When combining multiple panels, finish consistency matters. Installation Tips for Multi-Panel Systems

  • Hardware included: Each panel comes with all screws and dowels needed for installation — no separate hardware purchase required. Simply screw the first two mounting points into the wall, hang the trellis, then fix the bottom mounting point in its final position.
  • Built-in standoff for airflow: The mounting brackets position each panel 3.9" from the wall surface, creating a deliberate gap that promotes airflow behind the trellis and prevents moisture buildup against the wall — a common cause of mildew on foliage pressed flat against a surface. When installing multiple panels, this standoff distance is consistent across the system, so the visual depth reads uniformly.
  • Panel alignment: Always use a spirit level and mark fixing points in pencil before drilling. With a single panel, minor misalignment is barely noticeable. With a system of four or more, it's very visible.
  • Bottom clearance: Keep the lowest panel at least 12" above soil level to prevent moisture contact with the metal and reduce rust risk at the base.
  • Gap between panels: Maintain a 1–4" gap between adjacent panels (vertical or horizontal) — vines bridge the gap naturally as they grow, and the separation also allows for thermal movement of the metal across seasons.

Which Plants Work Best Across a Modular System?

Not every plant fills a large trellis system well. The best candidates for a multi-panel configuration are plants that spread both vertically and laterally as they mature:

  • Climbing roses — trained horizontally along the lower panels in year one, canes will push upward and outward to fill subsequent panels naturally. More horizontal training in early years = more bloom coverage across the full system.
  • Wisteria — a vigorous grower that will fill a large system within 3–5 years. Plan your panel grid generously.
  • Clematis (large-flowered varieties) — spreads well across a horizontal run; combine with a vertical stack for full coverage.
  • Jasmine and honeysuckle — fast-growing twiners that naturally spread across multiple panels without much training.
  • Espaliered fruit trees — a horizontal panel run at 3.9" from the wall is ideal for espalier, giving the branches a clear surface to be tied along without crowding.
